Givenchy was based in France, 1952, founded by designer Hubert de Givenchy, the first couturier who has invented the term pret-and-port and has started to create ready-to-wear clothes collections.
Refined elegance and classicism forms have always been Givenchy's traditional style. Well-known actress Audrey Hepburn became an embodiment of Givenchy's style. Audrey was dressed in Givenchy dresses in popular films such as How to Steal a Million and Breakfast at Tiffany's. Fans wished to look like Audrey and the house was instantly hit by huge popularity at the time.
"Separates" (1952), the bag-dress (1955), the funneled collar coat (1958), the enveloped dresses (1966), and the garments of printed textiles inspired by Miro, Matisse or Christian Bérard (the Eighties) are among his most original designs. Throughout the years, Givenchy diversified its activities by launching menswear line "Gentleman Givenchy" in 1973.
However, it was difficult for the house to adhere refinement and elegance meanwhile survive in the modern fashion world. Givenchy, the judge and admirer of high art of fashion, was compelled to sell the house to a European luxury goods giant- LVMN in 1988.
After that, Givenchy retired in 1995 and John Galliano succeeded him as designer, but he was soon replaced by Alexander McQueen in 1996. The reins for both haute couture and ready-to-wear for women and men were ultimately passed on to Riccardo Tisci in 2005.
Tisci's new aesthetics for Givenchy has drawn much attention to the brand. Amidst mixed and inconsistent reviews, still many have honed in on Tisci's conceptual leanings, his future potential for revitalizing Givenchy and infusing it with his unique precision and imagination.
Hubert de Givenchy is not only awarded 'the Gold thimble', but also he is the honourable chairman of Christie, the Parisian branch of auction house. The Master has dressed the most refined people of the world, such as Jacqueline Kennedy-Onasis, Grejs Kell, the duchess Windsor, the princess of Monaco, baroness Rothschild and last but not least, its main inspiration - Audrey Hepbern.
